14th January (Friday) was my father in law’s birthday. We and specially Y was very excited to celebrate his daadu’s birthday because birthday means balloons and cake. The birthday celebration was a hit but while finishing dinner, my mother in law complained of body ache and fever. We gave her medicines and quarantined her immediately. Her RT-PCR for COVID was scheduled for the next morning.
She tested positive. Since she was already in quarantine and we had heard that omicron was showing mild symptoms, we did not panic. We consulted a doctor and started her medications. The house-help was asked to stay on leave indefinitely and hence, that responsibility came up to me but since it was a weekend, things were manageable.
Saturday went okay except for the fact my own mom tested positive too, she was away at my cousin’s and felt fine. Mum in law felt fine too. None of us showed symptoms. And then bam! Sunday came. Y was normal till lunch but then suddenly started vomiting and had high fever. We knew it was omicron and we knew that now it won’t spare any of us. We consulted his paediatrician and put him on medications. He was drowsy and slept most of the time. His fever stayed for 2 days and on day 3, he was back to normal. To all the parents reading this, please don’t panic if your child gets omicron. Doctors are suggesting that kids only need symptomatic treatment and get well within 3-4 days. Just adhere to what doctor suggests, keep the little ones hydrated, and let them rest as much as possible.
Day after Y’s symptoms, my father in law had fever. By now, S and I knew that all of us are COVID positive and started waiting for our symptoms to show. Life is funny. For two years we took all precautions so that Y does not get COVID but Y was the one who ended up infecting both of us. S and papa got the RT PCR done and tested positive. I did not get tested but I knew that I was positive. We took a week’s off from work.
Next day, we ended mom’s quarantine and joined hands to fight against omicron. By now, mom was feeling better. Papa had fever. S and I were getting bored while waiting for our symptoms to show. One after the another, we also showed mild symptoms. It took one week for all of us (combined) to get and get rid of the omicron variant of COVID.
Symptoms were mildest for me, may be because I had delta variant last year. Rest of the adults had fever lasting up to 3 days, cold, and cough. All abided to doctor’s advise and prescriptions and felt better within 4-5 days.
Everyone seems to be getting it but as from what I have heard and read, this variant will affect 80% of the population and will bring herd immunity which will lead us towards the end season of this pandemic. I so hope that this happens. We have had enough yaar. We need our old lives back.
If you and your family ends up getting it, it should be okay. Don’t panic but also don’t take it lightly. Get doctor’s consultation ASAP, adhere to what your doctor suggests, and enjoy your week long break while spending time with family and watching various OTTs. This too shall pass.
